Let’s dispel this myth right away, cracking the window does nothing to reduce the temperature inside a vehicle left in the sun. In just minutes, temperatures inside a car will reach lethal levels for a child left behind. And that child’s body warms at a rate 3-5 times faster than an adult. What seems warm to you is much hotter for a child.
There’s no great mystery to be solved here. A child left alone in a car on even a mild winter day will succumb to hypothermia. It happens quicker than you might imagine as the three stages of hypothermia work quickly on children whose ability to regulate temperature is not as advanced as an adult's.
Naturally curious, a child gains access to a running vehicle and accidentally engages it into drive. The resulting accident can produce deadly consequences for the child inside the vehicle and any children outside the vehicle. Statistics show most roll-over accidents occur at home in driveways, proving you can never let your guard down for a moment.
Just as leaving your child left
unatended in a store or large crowd makes them a target for abduction, so too does leaving them in a car.
Children frequently climb into open car trunks and, while playing, accidently entrap themselves. Without ventilation, the temperature and humidity inside quickly escalates to deadly levels. Smaller children typically do not have the developmental skills to free themselves once trapped. If your car does not have a trap resistant kit, please visit your dealer to have one installed. Also common are instances of children being trapped by automatic windows.
